Gesashi River Mangrove canoe experience in Higashi Village, Yanbaru

SUI TAXI · YANBARU NATURE

Gesashi River Mangrove Paddling Through a Quiet Forest.

Higashi Village | Yanbaru | Okinawa Main Island's Largest Mangrove Forest | Canoe Experience

Quietly paddling a canoe through the largest mangrove forest on the Okinawa Main Island.

The Gesashi River Mangrove is the largest mangrove forest on the Okinawa Main Island, spreading across Higashi Village in Okinawa. Within the lush nature of northern Okinawa known as Yanbaru, mangrove trees of the Rhizophoraceae family grow densely from the river mouth upstream, forming a mystical green tunnel. At low tide, intricately tangled roots (prop roots and breathing roots) are exposed above the water surface, creating an otherworldly landscape resembling another planet. At high tide, water levels rise enough to paddle a canoe through the mangroves — offering completely different experiences depending on the tidal conditions.

Canoe and kayak experiences on the Gesashi River are offered by local activity operators. Beginner-friendly programs are well-established, starting with paddle techniques and continuing with explanations of mangrove ecology, terrain formation, and Yanbaru wildlife as you spend approximately 90 minutes to 2 hours exploring the interior of the mangrove forest. From the canoe gliding quietly across the water, the normally hidden world of mangrove roots unfolds before your eyes — rated as one of the finest nature experiences on the Okinawa main island. Canoe tour fees start from approximately ¥3,000 for adults.

The Gesashi River is adjacent to the northern Okinawa area of "Amami-Oshima, Tokunoshima, the Northern Part of Okinawa Island, and Iriomote Island," registered as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site in 2021. Yanbaru's forest is Japan's largest subtropical evergreen broadleaf forest and home to many endemic and rare species including the Okinawa Rail and Noguchi's Woodpecker. The Gesashi River Mangrove plays an important role as part of Yanbaru's ecosystem, allowing visitors to appreciate the world-class natural heritage while enjoying their visit.

Highlights of the Gesashi River Mangrove

The greatest appeal of the canoe experience is the extraordinary feeling of paddling out into silence, with no engine noise. The only sounds are the paddle cutting through the water, birdsong, and leaves rustling in the wind — a space that makes you forget everyday life. Within the mangrove forest, you may encounter crustaceans like fiddler crabs walking across the tidal flats, kingfishers and egrets flying along the waterside. It is a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts with observation points scattered throughout. As you paddle with on-site commentary, you will be genuinely amazed at the vitality of mangrove plants and the wonder of the brackish water ecosystem where saltwater and freshwater mix.

When visiting the Gesashi River Mangrove, scheduling according to the tides is important. Canoe tours are easiest around high tide when water levels are higher, so we recommend checking the optimal timing with local activity operators and then calculating backwards to set your SUI TAXI departure time. For viewing only, the exposed root landscape at low tide is also impressive, and you can walk and observe from the "Fureai Hirugi Park" in Higashi Village.

Getting to Gesashi River Mangrove by taxi

From central Naha, the Gesashi River is about 90–100 minutes by car. Located on the east coast, it is off the typical northern Okinawa sightseeing routes, and access by public transportation is virtually impossible. SUI TAXI's charter service truly excels in providing access to these hard-to-reach spots. Flexible departure times adjusted to tide schedules, standby during canoe experiences, and efficient combinations with other Yanbaru spots like ASMUI Spiritual Hikes and the subtropical forest — everything is tailored to your preferences.

The "Yanbaru Nature Exploration Course" combining the Gesashi River Mangrove with ASMUI Spiritual Hikes and the subtropical forest over 10 hours, from ¥70,000, is ideal for those who want to intensively experience Okinawa's pristine nature. Pickup from Naha or Onna Village resort hotels is available, and the drive along the lesser-known scenic east coast route is itself a special experience unique to SUI TAXI.

Check the tides before booking: The quality of the Gesashi River canoe experience varies significantly with tide levels. Around high tide (within 2 hours before or after) is when canoeing is easiest and you can venture deepest into the mangroves. When booking with SUI TAXI, let us know your preferred date and we will check the tide schedule to suggest the optimal departure time.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is a taxi from Naha to the Gesashi River?

A round-trip charter from Naha (10 hours) costs from ¥70,000. Any charter going north of Ogimi starts at 10 hours, wherever you set off from. A 10-hour course taking in other parts of Yanbaru is from ¥70,000. Expressway tolls, parking and the canoe operator's fees are charged separately.

Will the taxi wait during the canoe tour?

Yes. Waiting time is included in the charter fare. Canoe tours often run for around two hours, so it is worth allowing for that when you decide how long to book.

Can we depart to match the tide?

Yes. The mangroves look quite different at low and high tide. Tell us the meeting time your canoe operator has given you and we will work backwards to set the departure.

Can we visit other parts of Yanbaru?

ASMUI and Cape Hedo can be combined on a route that runs up the east coast. Public transport barely reaches this area, which is why a charter suits it.

Can you book the canoe tour for us?

Canoe tours need to be booked directly with the operator. We are happy to help you work out the timings around it.
