Nakagusuku Castle The Impregnable Fortress.
World Heritage | Best Preserved in Japan | 360-Degree Views
Even Commodore Perry was amazed — Japan's best-preserved castle ruins.
Nakagusuku Castle Ruins is a Ryukyuan gusuku (castle) site located in Nakagusuku and Kitanakagusuku Villages in central Okinawa. In the 15th century, the lord Gosamaru expanded and fortified the castle, which features extensive stone walls comprising six enclosures (kuruwa). Its state of preservation is regarded as the finest among all castle ruins in Japan, and in 2000, it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the "Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu."
From the highest point of the castle, you can enjoy a 360-degree panorama with Nakagusuku Bay to the east and the East China Sea and Naha cityscape to the west. The castle is also famous for the episode in which Commodore Perry, upon landing in the late Edo period, inspected the site and was astonished by its formidable construction. The fact that an American commander praised it attests to the exceptional architectural skill of this fortress.
Nearby, you can also visit the "Nakamura House" (a nationally designated Important Cultural Property), which offers a deeper understanding of Okinawa's history when combined with the castle. It takes about 30-40 minutes from Naha via the expressway. The "Central Gusuku Course (6 hours)" combining Nakagusuku with Katsuren Castle is one of our most popular routes.

Highlights of Nakagusuku Castle
Nakagusuku Castle is made up of six enclosures running from north to south: the First, Second, Third, South, West and East Enclosures. Following the visitor route through them in order lets you compare how the stone walls were built at different heights and angles. The view down over Nakagusuku Bay from the northern enclosure is especially memorable.
From the highest point at the First Enclosure, on a clear day you can take in Nakagusuku Bay and the Pacific to the east and the East China Sea with the Naha skyline to the west all at once. In 1853 Commodore Perry visited the castle and left detailed notes on its construction, which is part of why the site continues to draw interest from visitors abroad.
