SUI TAXI · WORLD HERITAGE

Shuri Castle Into the Soul of the Ryukyu Kingdom.

World Heritage | Ryukyu Royal Palace | Naha, Shuri

The Heart of the Ryukyu Kingdom, Exploring Approximately 450 Years of Royal Palace History.

Shuri Castle served as the royal palace of the Ryukyu Kingdom from the 14th to the 19th century. Its unique architectural beauty—a blend of Chinese and Japanese styles with striking red-lacquered walls—earned it UNESCO World Heritage status in 2000. Although the main hall was destroyed by fire in 2019, the ongoing reconstruction is open to visitors as a "visible restoration," attracting many tourists as a living witness to history.

Shuri Castle Park features many highlights including the Shureimon, Kankaimon, and Zuisenmon gates. The exhibits inside explore the history and culture of the Ryukyu Kingdom in depth. The prosperity of the Ryukyu Kingdom—which flourished as a hub of maritime trade in East Asia from the 14th to 19th century—is showcased through exquisite crafts, costumes, and calligraphy. Located in Naha's Shuri area, it is conveniently accessible from the airport and central Naha.

Nearby World Heritage sites Tamaudun (royal mausoleum) and Sonohyan Utaki Stone Gate are within walking distance and can be visited together. SUI TAXI's "Naha World Heritage Course (4 hours)" links three sites in one efficient run: Shuri Castle, Tamaudun, and Shikinaen Garden. It's the ideal course for those wishing to visit all of Naha's World Heritage sites in a single day.

Shureimon Gate at Shuri Castle

The Shureimon gate, symbol of the Ryukyu Kingdom. The plaque reads "Shurei no Kuni" (Land of Propriety).

Highlights of Shuri Castle

The first landmark you meet at the entrance is Shureimon Gate. Reconstructed in stone in 1958, this gate is depicted on the Japanese 2,000-yen banknote and is one of Okinawa's most recognised structures. Beyond it, Kankaimon and Zuisenmon Gates were built from Ryukyu limestone and feature arch structures that show clear Chinese influence. The stone-paved approach beyond them invites a slow walk back through several centuries of history.

The main hall is currently being rebuilt, with completion targeted for 2026. The site is open as a "visible restoration," so visitors can watch craftsmen working with traditional techniques up close — a rare opportunity that exists only during this rebuilding phase. The exhibition rooms inside the park introduce the history, crafts and diplomatic records of the Ryukyu Kingdom.
