The cliffs of Cape Hedo and the open sea

SUI TAXI · CAPE HEDO

Cape Hedo Where the island runs out.

From Naha | Private Charter | Kunigami | With ASMUI Spiritual Hikes

Where the road ends, Cape Hedo.

Keep driving north from Naha on Route 58 and the road eventually stops at Cape Hedo. This is the northern tip of Okinawa Island. Ahead of you is a cliff, and below it the East China Sea meets the Pacific. On windy days the waves break white against the rocks and you hear them from the top of the cliff.

When the air is clear, Yoron Island floats on the horizon about 22 kilometres away. That island belongs to Kagoshima Prefecture. What this cape meant to Okinawa before the 1972 reversion is written on the monument standing at the point. There is none of the bustle of a tourist attraction here. What is left is the view and the wind.

From the car park to the tip of the cape is about five minutes on a paved walkway. There is a lawn with benches. The walk is short, so it asks little of you even after a long drive.

The cliffs of Cape Hedo

Below the cliff, the East China Sea meets the Pacific.

How to spend a day this far north.

If Cape Hedo is the only stop, most of the day goes into driving. It is 2 hours 30 minutes each way. Since you have come this far, adding something along the route makes better use of the hours.

The usual pairing is ASMUI Spiritual Hikes, renamed from Daisekirinzan in December 2024, 10 to 15 minutes from the cape by car, where a walk of about an hour takes you through subtropical forest full of strange rock formations. Some visitors add Ta Falls or the Gesashi mangroves instead. All of them sit on Route 58 or just off it.

Cape Hedo by taxi

A round trip charter from Naha runs about 10 hours, from 70,000 yen including tax, with expressway tolls charged separately. On a stretch this long, handing over the driving is worth more than usual. The return leg often falls after dark, and the roads through Yanbaru carry few street lights.

Any charter going north of Ogimi starts at 10 hours, wherever you set off from. That includes hotels in Nago and Motobu, even though Cape Hedo is only about an hour from either.

Wind and temperature: The cape is windy all year round, which makes it feel colder than it is. Bring a layer even in summer.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is a taxi from Naha to Cape Hedo?

A round trip charter of 10 hours starts at 70,000 yen. That is the price for one Alphard carrying up to five people, so from 14,000 yen each with five. A one-way transfer from Naha Airport to a hotel in Kunigami is 38,500 yen with expressway tolls included. On charters, tolls and parking are charged separately at cost.

How many hours do I need?

Cape Hedo is about 2 hours 30 minutes each way from central Naha, so roughly 5 hours of driving. With a stop along the way, 10 hours is the realistic figure. Any charter going north of Ogimi starts at 10 hours, wherever you set off from.

Can I visit Cape Hedo and ASMUI Spiritual Hikes on the same day?

Yes. They are 10 to 15 minutes apart by car, so both fit inside the same 10 hours. ASMUI Spiritual Hikes has a walking course of about an hour once you enter, so doing ASMUI first and the cape afterwards makes the timing easier to predict.

How much walking is involved at the cape?

About five minutes on a paved walkway from the car park to the tip. There are no steep steps, and the lawn has benches. Most visitors stay around 30 minutes.

Is it suitable for young children?

The walk is short, so yes. Note that the railing along the cliff has gaps in places and the wind is strong, so it is safer to hold small children by the hand.

Is it worth going in winter?

Winter air is clearer, so Yoron Island is visible more often. The wind is stronger than in summer and it feels two or three degrees colder than Naha. Whether you have a windproof jacket makes a real difference to how long you can stay.
