Not at the end of a road, at the end of a river.
Ta Falls sits upstream on the Tsuha River in Ogimi Village. This is not a waterfall you look at from a viewing platform. You leave the car at the car park and walk about 30 minutes up the riverbed to reach it. In places the water comes to just below the knee, and the footing is rounded stones.
Subtropical trees close over from both banks, so the light falls onto the water in patches. All you hear on the way is water and birds. Then the view opens and you see the fall dropping roughly ten metres. Some people swim in the pool at the bottom.
Among Okinawa's sights, this is one of the few that asks something physical of you before you arrive. That is also why arriving feels different here.

What to settle before you go.
Your driver does not go into the river with you and waits at the car park. Walking the stream is your own decision and your own responsibility, and we say so plainly in advance rather than after you arrive.
You need shoes you can soak. Sandals come off on the stones and bare feet slip. Bring water shoes, or trainers you would not mind ruining. Bring a change of clothes too. Getting into the car wet is fine, but you will be in it for two hours afterwards.
The river rises after a spell of rain. Depending on the water level on the day, turning back is a real possibility. If that worries you, we suggest booking a local guided tour before you come.
Ta Falls by taxi
Round trip charters from Naha start at 10 hours, from 70,000 yen including tax, with expressway tolls charged separately. Two hours each way makes four, the walk and the falls take another two to three, and you need time to change afterwards.
ASMUI Spiritual Hikes, renamed from Daisekirinzan in December 2024, or Cape Hedo can be added inside the same 10 hours. Since Ta Falls already costs you some energy, though, not overloading the rest of the day usually makes for a better one. Any charter going north of Ogimi starts at 10 hours, wherever you set off from.

Charter fares are time-based at ¥7,000 per hour (¥3,500 per additional 30 minutes booked in advance). Extensions made after departure are ¥4,200 per 30 minutes. Guide fees, expressway tolls and parking are charged at cost. For charters of 6 hours or more we take a 30% deposit when you book, and the balance is paid on the day. Minimum booking times depend on where you start: from 3 hours in the south and central area, 4 hours in Onna Village and 6 hours in the north, and 8 hours for trips that cross between the south and the north. Where a long transfer is involved, the transfer fare for that stretch is the floor for the price.

How much is a taxi from Naha to Ta Falls?
A round trip charter of 10 hours starts at 70,000 yen. That is the price for one Alphard carrying up to five people, so from 14,000 yen each with five. A one-way transfer from Naha Airport to a hotel in Ogimi is 38,500 yen with expressway tolls included. On charters, tolls and parking are charged separately at cost.
Does the driver come to the falls with me?
No. The driver waits at the car park. Walking the river is your own decision and responsibility. If you would like someone with you, booking a local guided tour before you come is the safer arrangement.
What footwear do I need?
Water shoes, or trainers you do not mind soaking and scuffing. Sandals catch on the stones and come off, and bare feet slip. Bring a change of clothes and a towel as well.
Can I bring children?
The walk is 30 minutes up the riverbed with water to just below the knee in places. Children of upper primary school age generally manage it; younger than that we consider too much. For a young family, the Gesashi mangroves in the same part of Yanbaru suit better.
What happens if it rains?
The river rises after rain. Depending on the water level that day, the right decision may be to turn back without entering. When the weather is unreadable we will suggest an indoor alternative instead.
Can I get in the car while still wet?
Yes, and there are towels in the vehicle. You will be driving two hours back to Naha afterwards, though, so a change of clothes makes the trip more comfortable.
