Neopark Okinawa Up Close with Subtropical Animals.

Nago City | Animal Interaction Park | Flamingos & Capybaras

Get up close and personal with tropical and subtropical animals in nature

Neopark Okinawa is a nature park spread across the lush hills of Nago City, where visitors can interact up close with rare animals and birds from tropical and subtropical regions. What sets it apart from typical zoos is that many animals are kept in free-range conditions. Visitors walk through the same space as the animals, directly feeding and interacting with them. For children and adults alike, this close-distance animal experience creates unforgettable memories.

The most popular residents are the flamingos, with their vivid pink feathers. Walking freely around the gracefully strolling flamingos is a luxurious experience rarely available even at full-scale zoos. The adorable capybaras, with their stocky bodies and charming faces, are a huge hit with children — during feeding time, everyone becomes captivated as the capybaras approach. Other residents include Malayan tapirs, white peacocks, toucans, and giant anteaters — rare subtropical and tropical animals living vibrantly within the park.

Another highlight of Neopark Okinawa is the "Okinawa Light Railway", a miniature railway that circles the park. This small train moves at a gentle pace, safe even for the youngest children. The views of subtropical trees and animals from the train offer a different perspective from walking. There is an additional fee for the train ride, but it is an especially recommended attraction for families with small children.

Walking alongside free-range flamingos is Neopark Okinawa's greatest appeal.

Combine Nago's animal park with northern sightseeing

Neopark Okinawa is conveniently located about 10 minutes by car from central Nago City. The grounds feature numerous tropical and subtropical plants from South America, Africa, and Southeast Asia, giving the park a botanical garden aspect as well. Blooming bougainvillea and hibiscus flowers add color to the animal habitats, creating a tropical Okinawan atmosphere.

The Nago City area is a hub of northern sightseeing with many attractions nearby. Right near Neopark Okinawa is Orion Happy Park, where you can tour the Orion Beer production process (free, with tasting). A popular local itinerary is spending the morning at Neopark for animal interactions, then stopping by Orion Happy Park in the afternoon. During the Hikanzakura cherry blossom season (January–February), Neopark can also be combined with Nago Castle Park for a fulfilling full-day Nago City tour.

Capybara feeding is a huge hit with kids. Non-stop smiles guaranteed.

Getting to Neopark Okinawa by taxi

From Naha, Neopark Okinawa is approximately 80–90 minutes via expressway (Naha IC to Kyoda IC). Located within Nago City, it pairs perfectly with a day of northern sightseeing covering Junglia, Nago Castle Park, and Orion Happy Park. With SUI TAXI's Alphard charter, you can freely adjust the time spent at each facility and enjoy a relaxed Nago City experience at your children's pace.

A standalone visit to Neopark Okinawa takes about 1.5–2 hours including the feeding experience and train ride. A Nago half-day to full-day course visiting Neopark in the morning and Junglia (or Nago Castle Park/Orion Happy Park) in the afternoon starts from ¥35,000 and is a family travel favorite.

Morning feeding time is best: The animals are most active in the early morning hours, making the feeding experience especially rewarding. Both flamingos and capybaras are more likely to approach, and photos turn out beautifully. Departing Naha around 8 AM will get you there by the 10 AM opening time, allowing a relaxed interaction before the crowds arrive.
