Nago Castle Park To the Northern Hill Painted by Cherry Blossoms.

Nago City | Famous Hikanzakura Cherry Blossom Spot | Nago Bay Panorama & Hilltop Park

Japan's earliest cherry blossoms and hilltop views — Nago Castle Park

Nago Castle Park is a lush hilltop park spreading across the slopes of Mt. Nago in the center of Nago City. A favorite family-friendly retreat in northern Okinawa, the park is surrounded by subtropical trees and offers stunning views of Nago Bay. Admission is free, parking is available, and it is beloved as a public park by locals.

Nago Castle Park became nationally famous as a celebrated spot for Hikanzakura (Taiwan cherry blossoms). These uniquely Okinawan cherry blossoms bloom earlier than mainland varieties, flowering each year from late January to early February. The sight of deep pink blossoms blanketing the hillside is spectacular, and the "Nago Cherry Blossom Festival" held in late January annually draws large crowds of tourists and locals alike. The park is said to contain approximately 20,000 Hikanzakura trees, making it one of Okinawa's largest cherry blossom sites and a major media feature every year.

Even outside the cherry blossom season, the park offers plenty of attractions. The observation deck at the top of the stone steps leading up the hill provides sweeping views of the gentle arc of Nago Bay and the blue horizon of the East China Sea beyond. The townscape of Nago and the calm sea create panoramic vistas unique to the north. The park also features playground equipment and rest areas, making it easy for families with small children to spend 1–2 relaxing hours.

Leafy walking trails and a base for northern sightseeing

The park features well-maintained walking trails shaded by towering subtropical trees, and as you climb the hill, the views open up dramatically. Near the summit, a panorama of Nago's townscape merging with the sea awaits. With plenty of photogenic spots beyond just cherry blossom season, it is a place to soak in the relaxed Okinawan atmosphere at your own pace.

Nago City also serves as a gateway for northern sightseeing, providing convenient access to many attractions. Junglia, the buzzworthy theme park that opened in 2025, is about 10 minutes by car; Churaumi Aquarium is about 20 minutes; and Busena Marine Park is about 15 minutes — major tourist destinations are nearby, allowing efficient touring. The city also features uniquely Okinawan facilities such as "Orion Happy Park," and when combined with Nago Castle Park, makes for a fulfilling half-day to full-day sightseeing course.

Getting to Nago Castle Park by taxi

From Naha to Nago Castle Park is approximately 80–90 minutes via expressway (Naha IC to Kyoda IC). From Naha Airport, allow about 90 minutes for a comfortable arrival. In SUI TAXI's Alphard, even long-distance travel can be enjoyed in comfort while taking in the beautiful Okinawan coastal drive.

Nago Castle Park is free admission with free parking, making it an excellent match for charter taxi tours. The popular Northern Full-Day Course combines Nago Castle Park with Junglia, Churaumi Aquarium, and Nakijin Castle Ruins. An 8–9 hour charter from Naha covering Nago Castle Park, Churaumi Aquarium, and Nakijin Castle Ruins starts from ¥49,600. During the Hikanzakura season (January–February), demand is especially high, so early booking is recommended.

Early morning visits recommended during the Cherry Blossom Festival (late Jan–early Feb): The area around the park becomes very crowded during the Nago Cherry Blossom Festival. Arriving early, around 9–10 AM, allows for a leisurely stroll, and the morning light beautifully illuminates the Hikanzakura. During the festival, parking lots often fill up, making taxi travel the most convenient option.
