Michi-no-Eki Kadena airbase observation

SUI TAXI · CENTRAL OKINAWA

Michi-no-Eki Kadena Airbase and postwar history.

Kadena Town | Rooftop observation deck | US Air Base runway view

A roadside station overlooking the largest US airbase in the Far East.

Michi-no-Eki Kadena in Kadena Town sits right next to Kadena Air Base, the largest US Air Force base in the Far East. From the rooftop observation deck you can look directly onto the runways and aprons, watching fighters and transport planes take off and land — an experience you simply cannot find anywhere else in Okinawa. Military aircraft taking off and landing with their full thunder is something aviation fans never forget.

Free binoculars on the deck let you study aircraft on the distant parking aprons in detail, and signboards explain aircraft types and unit assignments so you can enjoy the view even without prior knowledge. It is also a rare place where, during a sightseeing trip, you can quietly face the reality of the military base situation Okinawa still lives with today.

Postwar Okinawa history exhibit.

Inside the building, a history exhibit tells the story of Kadena Air Base and of postwar Okinawa as a whole — prewar Kadena, the Battle of Okinawa, the US administration period, and today's base-related issues, all through photos and documents. It is a thoughtful complement to sightseeing, adding a layer of historical understanding to a short break.

On the ground floor you will find a farmers market with Kadena Town produce and processed goods, and a restaurant serving local dishes. Its position fits naturally into routes between the west-coast resort belt and Naha, or in combination with Shuri Castle and southern sights.

Best time to visit: aircraft activity is generally more active on weekdays, roughly 10:00 to 15:00. Weekends tend to be quieter. Weekday visits are best if you want a high chance of seeing fighters. The noise can be very loud — consider bringing earplugs if you are traveling with small children.
