Peace Memorial Park Memories Carved into Mabuni Hill.
Itoman, Mabuni | Cornerstone of Peace | Final Battleground of the Battle of Okinawa
The Names of Over 240,000 Engraved on This Sacred Ground of Remembrance.
Okinawa Prefectural Peace Memorial Park, spread across Mabuni Hill in Itoman City, is Okinawa's foremost sacred place of peace, established at the site where the Battle of Okinawa ended. Situated on a hilltop overlooking the Pacific Ocean, in a quiet place where the sound of waves can be heard from afar, the "Cornerstone of Peace" (Heiwa no Ishiji) stretches out with the names of all those who perished in the war engraved upon it. The most important significance of this cornerstone is that the names of all war dead related to the Battle of Okinawa are inscribed regardless of nationality -- Japanese, Okinawan, American, British, Korean, and others. The number exceeds 240,000, and the rows of inscriptions extend approximately 330 meters in total length.
Within the park, in addition to the Cornerstone of Peace, you'll find the Okinawa Prefectural Peace Memorial Museum, which conveys the history of the Battle of Okinawa in detail, the Peace Memorial Hall enshrining the guardian deity of the Ryukyu Kingdom, and numerous memorial monuments donated by prefectures and foreign countries. The Peace Memorial Museum's exhibitions are particularly comprehensive, systematically covering the full picture of the Battle of Okinawa -- from prewar Okinawan life through the fierce battles to postwar reconstruction. Plan to spend at least 2-3 hours for a proper visit to the park.
Peace Memorial Park is about 50 minutes from Naha city center. As a peace learning course in southern Okinawa, many visitors combine it with Himeyuri Tower. SUI TAXI's southern charter plan proposes routes that allow comfortable visits to both spots. Whether for school excursions, family history learning, or personal pilgrimages to renew one's commitment to peace, many guests have used our service. This is a place we encourage every visitor to Okinawa to experience at least once.

Highlights of Peace Memorial Park
A ceremony is held at the Cornerstone of Peace every year on June 23, "Memorial Day," to continue passing down the memories of the Battle of Okinawa. Standing before the vast number of names engraved on the stone monuments, the gravity of war and the preciousness of life press upon your heart. The park is well-maintained, the panoramic view of the Pacific is magnificent, and it compels you to reflect that this place was the site of the final fierce battles of Okinawa. The Peace Memorial Hall houses the Peace Memorial Statue, and visitors offering prayers in the silence never cease.
The Okinawa Prefectural Peace Memorial Museum (admission: adults 300 yen) offers exhibits of exceptional quality and depth, making it one of the most important museums for learning about the Battle of Okinawa. Through video materials and testimonial exhibits, the lives and hardships of Okinawan people during wartime are vividly conveyed. After visiting the museum and standing before the cornerstone, you cannot help but feel that behind each name engraved there was once a life that truly existed.

The Southern Peace Learning Course by Taxi
The "Southern Peace Course" centered on Peace Memorial Park is popular as a 6-7 hour charter course combining Himeyuri Tower (approx. 90 min) followed by Peace Memorial Park (approx. 2 hours) and Okinawa World (approx. 1.5 hours). SUI TAXI's Alphard provides comfortable transfers between each spot, ensuring ample time to engage deeply with each location. Efficiently visiting these spots, which are difficult to reach by public transportation, is the greatest advantage of a charter taxi.
The "Southern Full Course (8 hours)," adding Cape Chinen Park and Sefa Utaki (World Heritage), lets you experience both the history of peace and Ryukyuan spiritual culture in a single day. We also accommodate plans departing directly from Naha Airport for southern sightseeing and dropping you off at your hotel at the end, allowing you to make the most of your time from the very first day in Okinawa. We recommend allowing generous time allocation for Peace Memorial Park to ensure a meaningful visit.
— Tips for Visiting Peace Memorial Park: The park is vast, so please wear comfortable walking shoes. During summer, the sun is intense and temperatures are high, so don't forget a hat and water. Please observe quiet reverence in front of the Cornerstone of Peace.
