Nakijin Castle Ruins of the Northern King.

World Heritage | Motobu Peninsula | Northern Okinawa

The Legendary Castle Ruled by the Northern King.

Nakijin Castle Ruins (Nakijin-jo Ato) are located on the Motobu Peninsula in northern Okinawa Island. This magnificent castle flourished as the residence of the Northern King (Hokuzan-o) from the 14th to 15th centuries, and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000 as part of the "Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu." Second in scale only to Shuri Castle, its 1.5 km of gracefully curving stone walls are celebrated as the most beautiful castle walls in Okinawa.

The castle's greatest feature is its multiple enclosures (kuruwa) that cleverly exploit the natural terrain, combined with the beauty of its gently curving stone walls. The rough stone masonry (nozurazumi) technique employed by skilled craftsmen is particularly highly regarded among Ryukyuan gusuku architecture. From within the castle, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Ie Island, the mountains of the Motobu Peninsula, and on clear days, even distant Yoron Island.

Nakijin Castle is also regarded as one of Okinawa's premier cherry blossom viewing spots. From late January to early February—earlier than mainland Japan—kanhizakura (scarlet cherry trees) planted along the castle walls burst into full bloom, creating a breathtaking contrast of pink blossoms against the ancient stone. During this season, the "Nakijin Gusuku Cherry Blossom Festival" is held, drawing especially large crowds.

Highlights Around Nakijin Castle

At the entrance to Nakijin Castle Ruins, you'll find the "Nakijin Village Gusuku Exchange Center," which serves as a museum exhibiting the castle's history and excavated artifacts. Admission is free, and stamp rally cards are also available. Learning the historical background before exploring the ruins will deepen your appreciation. Within the castle grounds, there are sacred utaki (prayer sites) still used for worship today — please visit them with respect.

About 15-20 minutes by car from Nakijin Castle, you'll find the world-famous Churaumi Aquarium (Ocean Expo Park) and Kouri Island, known for its heart-shaped rock. The "Northern Okinawa Full Course (7-8 hours)" combining Nakijin Castle, Kouri Island, and Churaumi Aquarium is one of SUI TAXI's most popular routes, allowing you to efficiently tour the best of northern Okinawa.

Getting to Nakijin Castle by Taxi

From Naha to Nakijin Castle, it takes approximately 1 hour 40-50 minutes using the expressway (Naha IC to Kyoda IC). With SUI TAXI's Alphard, you can enjoy the northern scenery in comfort while traveling. Viewing time at the castle ruins (approximately 1-1.5 hours) is included within the charter fee — your driver will wait on-site.

Naha to Nakijin Castle only (4-5 hours) starts from approximately ¥24,800. The "Northern Full Course (8 hours)" combined with Churaumi Aquarium and Kouri Island is approximately ¥49,600 (expressway tolls and admission fees not included). Cherry blossom season (January-February) is especially popular, so early booking is recommended.

Cherry Blossom Season: January - February — Nakijin Castle Ruins is one of Okinawa's top cherry blossom spots. Kanhizakura cherry blossoms reach their peak from late January to early February — 1-2 months earlier than mainland Japan. This makes it a popular season for visitors who want to "enjoy cherry blossoms twice."
