Shikinaen Time Stands Still in the Royal Garden.
World Heritage | Ryukyuan Garden | Naha City
The stage of Ryukyuan diplomacy — the only World Heritage garden in Naha.
Shikinaen is a strolling garden built in the late 18th century as a royal villa for the Ryukyu Kingdom. It is the only UNESCO World Heritage garden in Okinawa, located within Naha City, about 2 km south of Shuri Castle. Centered around a spacious pond, the garden features a Chinese-style hexagonal pavilion, stone bridges, a waterfall, and an observation deck, all arranged to create a beauty unique to Ryukyu — distinct from both Japanese daimyo gardens and Chinese gardens.
Historically, it served as a venue for entertaining Chinese investiture envoys (sapposhi), making it a stage for Ryukyuan diplomacy. During its heyday, the Ryukyu Kingdom thrived as a maritime trade hub connecting Japan, China, and Southeast Asia, and Shikinaen symbolized that prosperity. Severely damaged during the Pacific War, it was carefully restored and inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 2000.
Today, it is also cherished as a place of relaxation for Naha residents. Despite being close to Shuri Castle, it receives relatively few tourists, making it a hidden gem for those who want to enjoy a quiet garden stroll. A walk around the pond takes about 30 minutes. Seasonal Okinawan plants color the garden throughout the year, and it is especially beautiful during flowering season.

Garden Beauty and History of Shikinaen
The large pond at the center of Shikinaen is said to be shaped like the Chinese character for "heart" (kokoro). Walking paths surround the pond, offering views of the garden's beauty from various angles. The Chinese-style hexagonal pavilion sits on a small island in the pond, accessible by a stone bridge. It is said that this pavilion was built to remind the Chinese envoys of their homeland, reflecting the sophistication of Ryukyuan diplomacy.
An observation deck offers views overlooking Shuri Castle and the Naha cityscape. Throughout the grounds, you can observe Okinawa's distinctive construction techniques using Ryukyu limestone in stone walls, bridges, and masonry — a rare opportunity to appreciate these in the context of a garden rather than a castle. Multiple information boards installed by Naha City provide historical background as you stroll through the grounds.
