Sefa Utaki The Holiest Sacred Site of Ryukyu.
World Heritage | Utaki Worship | Nanjo City
Overlooking Kudaka Island, the supreme sacred site of Ryukyu.
Sefa Utaki is the most revered sacred site (utaki) of the Ryukyu Kingdom, located on a cape in Nanjo City. Through the space known as "Sangui" — where massive triangular rocks lean against each other — you can gaze upon Kudaka Island, known as the "Island of the Gods." In the past, only the king was permitted to enter this place, and it served as the site for the inauguration ceremony of the Kikoe-Okimi, the highest-ranking priestess of the Ryukyu Kingdom.
Even after its World Heritage designation, the site continues to be protected as a place of worship for local people, and simply walking along the approach path, you can feel a distinctive spiritual atmosphere. The path, lined with centuries-old trees, is rich with nature, and the sunlight filtering through the leaves in the morning creates a mystical ambiance. When visiting, it is important to do so quietly and with respect.
The "Southern Course (5-6 hours)" combining Sefa Utaki with Okinawa World and Chinen Castle Ruins is our most popular route. Your driver takes you to the entrance and waits while you walk the grounds. If you need a detailed account of the historical background of Sefa Utaki and the utaki worship tradition, please arrange a licensed specialist separately; even without specialist commentary, standing in the sanctuary is a special moment on the journey, offering a glimpse into the depth of Okinawa's spiritual culture.

Highlights of Sefa Utaki
Sangui sits at the innermost part of Sefa Utaki. It is a triangular space formed where two massive rocks lean against each other, and from beyond it you can look out toward Kudaka Island, known as the Island of the Gods. The site is still used as a place of prayer today, so please visit quietly.
The stone-paved approach from the car park to Sangui takes about 15 to 20 minutes through the forest. In the morning, sunlight filters down through the trees and you can hear birdsong along the way. Some sections are steep, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The view of Kudaka Island from Sangui on a clear day is something many visitors say they remember long after the trip.

How long does the visit take?
About an hour from buying tickets to walking the path up to Sangui and back, a little more if you take your time.
Is there anything we should know before visiting?
It is a sacred site where people still come to pray. Keep your voice down and do not take stones away. The path is stone and earth and turns slippery in the rain.
Are there days when it is closed?
A few days each year are set aside as rest days following the lunar calendar, when no one may enter. Tell us your dates and we will check before building the route.
Can we add Chinen Cape or Okinawa World?
Yes, five and 10 minutes away. All three make a 5 to 6 hour southern course from ¥35,000.
