The Sonohyan Utaki Stone Gate is a stone gate situated between the Shureimon Gate and the Kankaimon Gate within Shuri Castle Park. Built in 1519, it was a sacred utaki where the Ryukyuan king offered prayers for safe travels during important state occasions. Constructed by stacking limestone blocks, the stone gate was partially damaged during the Battle of Okinawa but was restored in 1957, and after dismantling repair in 1986 it reached its current form. It has been highly regarded for its delicate masonry technique and was inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 2000.

As a symbol of utaki worship — Ryukyu's indigenous religious culture of designating sacred places as sites of prayer — it remains a place of faith for local people today. Located within Shuri Castle Park, it can be naturally visited as part of a Shuri Castle tour, allowing you to experience its history and spiritual significance along the sightseeing route.

Though modest in size, the gate's beautiful form — a crystallization of Ryukyuan stone masonry technique — evokes a feeling of serene reverence. As evidenced by its 1519 construction date, this stone gate has an older history than the main hall of Shuri Castle itself, and the fact that it has been carefully restored and preserved to this day is truly remarkable. Many local people still maintain the tradition of offering prayers for safety at this gate before entering Shuri Castle Park.

Utaki Worship and the Architectural Beauty of the Stone Gate

"Utaki" refers to sacred sites where gods are believed to dwell in Ryukyuan indigenous religion. Among the many utaki found across Okinawa, Sonohyan Utaki holds the highest status as one of the "Seven Utaki of Shuri." The Ryukyuan kings are said to have worshipped at this utaki at both the beginning and end of their reigns. The stone gate marks the entrance to this sacred domain, signifying that one enters holy ground by passing through it.

Architecturally, the gate is characterized by its stone construction built with carefully stacked Ryukyu limestone. It represents the pinnacle of stonework techniques seen in Okinawan gusuku (castle) architecture, its beautiful silhouette having been carefully restored after war damage. Viewing is free of charge and can be done right after entering Shuri Castle Park. A visit takes approximately 15-20 minutes.

Getting to Sonohyan Utaki Stone Gate by Taxi

A 3-hour course combined with Shuri Castle starts from ¥18,600. Since the Sonohyan Utaki Stone Gate is located along the sightseeing route within Shuri Castle Park, no additional travel time is needed. The "Naha World Heritage Full Course (5 hours)," which also includes Tamaudun and Shikinaen, starts from approximately ¥31,000.
