A small island, a bridge away.
Sesoko Island lies off the Motobu Peninsula and is about eight kilometres around. Since Sesoko Bridge opened in 1985 you can simply drive across. The bridge is 762 metres long, and with the window down you can watch the water change colour as it goes from shallows to deeper channel.
Sesoko Beach, on the west side of the island, is one of the beaches people name when they talk about clear water near the main island. The white sand runs for roughly 800 metres and the shallows keep the waves gentle. On summer afternoons the peak of Ie Island sits on the horizon.
On the east side, right by the bridge, Anchi Beach puts you on the sand almost straight from the car park. If getting down to Sesoko Beach sounds like work, this is the easier option.

The aquarium is about 15 minutes by car from Sesoko Island. On an 8-hour charter from Naha, both fit into the day without rushing. Most people take the aquarium in the morning and spend the afternoon on the island.
The Bise fukugi tree lane is two minutes from the aquarium, so some visitors make it three stops. If you actually want to sit on the beach, though, two stops usually leaves you happier than three.
Sesoko Island by taxi
A round trip charter from Naha runs about 8 hours, from 56,000 yen including tax, with expressway tolls charged separately. It is two hours each way, so the driving alone accounts for four. Not having to cover that distance after a swim is the plain advantage of a charter.
The Sesoko Beach car park fills up on summer weekends. Your driver waits with the car, so you never join the queue for a space. Get in wet if you like. There are towels in the vehicle.

Charter fares are time-based at ¥7,000 per hour (¥3,500 per additional 30 minutes booked in advance). Extensions made after departure are ¥4,200 per 30 minutes. Admission, expressway tolls and parking are charged at cost. For charters of 6 hours or more we take a 30% deposit when you book, and the balance is paid on the day. Minimum booking times depend on where you start: from 3 hours in the south and central area, 4 hours in Onna Village and 6 hours in the north, and 8 hours for trips that cross between the south and the north. Where a long transfer is involved, the transfer fare for that stretch is the floor for the price.

How much is a taxi from Naha to Sesoko Island?
A round trip charter of 8 hours starts at 56,000 yen. That is the price for one Alphard carrying up to five people, so from 11,200 yen each with five. A one-way transfer from Naha Airport to a hotel in Motobu or Nakijin is 35,000 yen with expressway tolls included. On charters, tolls and parking are charged separately at cost.
Can I visit Sesoko Island and Churaumi Aquarium on the same day?
Yes. They are about 15 minutes apart, so both fit into an 8-hour charter. The aquarium in the morning and the island in the afternoon tends to work best. The Bise fukugi lane is close enough to make it three stops if you want.
Can I get in the car straight after swimming?
Please do. There are towels in the vehicle and salt water will not harm the seats, so change whenever it suits you rather than working around the car.
How far is the walk to the beach?
At Sesoko Beach you go down a slope and some steps from the car park. It is not far, but it is uphill on the way back. Anchi Beach is essentially flat from the car park, so that is what we suggest if footing is a concern.
Does the car park fill up on summer weekends?
It does. Your driver waits with the car, though, so you never queue for a space yourself. Being dropped at the entrance and agreeing a pick-up time is the smoothest way to handle it.
Is it worth going in winter?
Too cold for swimming, but with fewer people the colour of the water reads more clearly, and the air over the bridge is cleaner than in summer. Lifeguarded swimming usually runs April to October, so winter visits are about walking rather than the water.
